  • Which airport should I fly into for Bhutan?

Bhutan only has one international airport, Paro International Airport (PBH). From here, if you're visiting other parts of Bhutan, there are sometimes shuttle buses available. There are also three domestic airports, Gelephu Airport, Yongphulla Airport (YON) and Bathpalathang Airport (BUT) that you can fly to from Paro Airport (PBH).

  • What documentation do I need to travel to Bhutan?

For UK citizens travelling to Bhutan, you must hold a passport that is valid for at least six months from the date you intend to depart Bhutan. You also require a visa to enter the country, which must be applied for through a tour operator ahead of your trip; approval must also be received prior to your travel dates. The visa itself is given to you upon arrival.

  • Which airlines will I use to fly direct into Bhutan?

Drukair, also known as Royal Bhutan Airlines and Bhutan Airlines, are the only airlines that offer flights into Bhutan. They operate a limited number of routes with flights departing from New Delhi (DEL), Singapore, and Bangkok among others. They don't offer direct flights from the UK, so you'll need to fly to one of the above cities from the UK first, before transferring.

  • What’s a good way to get to Jigme Dorji National Park from Paro Airport?

A simple way to get to Jigme National Park from Paro Airport is by car. We recommend hiring a vehicle from one of the car hire companies located at the airport. The journey takes around 5h via the capital city, Thimphu.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Bhutan

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Bhutan flight deals.
  • Unfortunately, there are currently no direct flights available from the UK to Bhutan. It is recommended to fly to Indian airports such as New Delhi or Kolkata (CCU) and arrange local connection flights in India and overland travel like buses and trains to the Bhutanese border.
  • For travellers from the UK, a visa for Bhutan lasts 14 days. It can, in some cases, be extended for another 14 days on the grounds of illness. If you are travelling on an Indian passport, you can be granted an entry permit that's valid for up to 90 days upon arrival. You don't need to apply ahead of time.
  • Should you be travelling on a budget, check out flights to India with a few stopovers and a combination of airlines, such as those departing London Luton Airport (LTN) with Wizz Air UK, IndiGo Airlines and SpiceJet, via Tirana International Airport (TIA), Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) and Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (BOM), before arriving at Patna Airport (PAT). From Patna, you can catch a train from Hajipur Junction Station to Hasimara, and then a bus to Phuentsholing, over the border. Buses run regularly to the capital, Thimphu, from Phuentsholing.
  • Kolkata Airport (CCU) offers frequent connections to Bhutan, and you can find flights from the UK that connect through Delhi (DEL), Doha (DOH) and Mumbai (BOM). You can find flights departing from London Heathrow Airport (LHR), Manchester Airport (MAN) and Edinburgh Airport (EDI). From Kolkata, you'll need to self-transfer to your flight to Paro.
  • Be mindful that foreign citizens, except for Indian, Bangladeshi and Maldivian citizens, may only enter and depart Bhutan via towns such as Gelephug, Phuentsholing and Samdrup Jongkhar by road, or Paro by air.
  • Flights to Bhutan will fill up quickly during the country's festivals. These are by far the busiest time to visit, and you may find flights difficult to book and more expensive. The Paro Tshechu festival generally takes place over a week in late March or early April and the Thimphu Tshechu usually takes place in September.
  • A convenient way to get from Paro International Airport (PBH) to the capital city of Thimphu is by taxi. The city is around 30 miles from the airport and the journey takes around 1h 20min. The charge for this service is very reasonable, at about Nu.1000 (£10).
