FAQs - booking Alaska flights

  • I’m booking a flight to Alaska for a glacier cruise. Which airport do I choose?

Glacier cruises in Alaska depart from the coastal cities of Anchorage or Juneau. Both cities’ international airports are served by flights to Alaska via Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, operated by Alaska Airlines. However, if you’re flying on another airline or are planning a stopover in another city in the United States, choosing Anchorage Airport is the best option.

  • Which airport is closest to the Kenai Fjords National Park?

Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is the closest to the Kenai Fjords National Park, approximately 2h 15min away by car. Exit Glacier is one of the most popular areas of the park, but do check any warnings before travelling here, especially if you’re booking a last-minute flight to Alaska to visit the Kenai Fjords National Park. Some areas of the park might be closed at short notice due to potential icefalls.

  • I’m travelling to Alaska to see the Northern Lights. Which airports should I choose?

One of the best places in Alaska to view the Northern Lights is in Fairbanks, which is served by Fairbanks International Airport. This airport is served by regular flights operated by Alaska Airlines from Seattle Tacoma and Anchorage. If you want more options for stopovers when flying from the UK, there are also some seasonal flights from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP), Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

  • How do I book a flight to visit the Arctic Coast?

The city closest to the Arctic Coast is the northernmost city of Utqiagvik (Barrow), served by the Wiley Post-Will Rogers Memorial Airport (BRW). This airport is served by regular domestic flights from Anchorage and Fairbanks, operated by Alaska Airlines. Booking a flight to Barrow from anywhere in the United Kingdom involves multiple airlines and at least two stopovers since Alaska Airlines doesn't operate direct flights to Alaska from the UK.

  • How does KAYAK find such low prices on flights from the United Kingdom to Alaska?

KAYAK is a travel search engine. That means we look across the web to find the best prices we can find for our users. With over 2 billion flight queries processed yearly, we are able to display a variety of prices and options on flights from the United Kingdom to Alaska.

  • How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy my flight ticket from the United Kingdom to Alaska?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a flight from the United Kingdom to Alaska is likely to change within 7 days, so travellers know whether to wait or book now.

  • What is the Hacker Fare option on flights from the United Kingdom to Alaska?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets in order to save you money over a traditional return ticket. You could then fly from the United Kingdom to Alaska with an airline and back with another airline.

  • What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care when looking for a flight from the United Kingdom to Alaska?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you all the options when flying from the United Kingdom to Alaska up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. You can then pick the flights that suit you best.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Alaska

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Alaska flight deals.
  • Alaska is served by three main airports: Fairbanks International Airport (FAI), Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) and Juneau International Airport (JNU). If you want to select an airport with the most flight options from the UK, Anchorage has the most direct flights to Alaska from other destinations in the United States.
  • There are no direct flights to Alaska from the United Kingdom, so you’ll always need to plan for one or two stopovers. The most frequent stopover airports for passengers travelling to Anchorage are Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA).
  • Even though Juneau is the capital city of Alaska, its airport has fewer options when it comes to airlines and routes. When booking flights to Alaska that land at this airport, you'll be limited to Alaska Airlines and a stopover in either Seattle or Anchorage.
  • Many people travel to Alaska from June to September, which is a popular time for whale watching, or from September to April, when most people travel to Alaska to experience the Northern Lights. If any of these nature-related activities is on your radar and you’d like to combine both in the same trip, it’s best if you start looking for flights as far in advance as possible.
  • UK citizens can travel to the United States visa-free if they're visiting for fewer than 90 days, but they still need a valid passport. Passengers travelling for tourism should apply for an ESTA, the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation, in advance.

Food has been disappointing in both legs of flight to india

Great staff great experience, made a 2 hour delay very bearable

Great staff, great experience, made a 2 hour delay very bearable

Food was the worst I’ve had on a VA flight. Normally it’s a lot better

I was my pleasure to fly virgin on my birthday for my first solo trip ever 🫶🏼

These are one of the older seat arrangements facing away from the windows! Not particularly convenient sets. No storage spaces. NO COAT HANGING HOOKS. Inconvenient business class seat compared to any other airlines of similar class. Staff are excellent! Extremely professional, friendly. Food is good too.

Overall, flight was excellent but check in was very slow for Premium Economy. Economy queue was shorter but we weren't allowed to use it.

The staff was not very polite but the flight was very very nice and comfortable and the entertainment was great

Great crew - old style upper class seats on the older fleet now feels dated

Premium economy more comfortable than economy, but not by much. Did was awful, do not try the omelette. Flight crew were helpful. Flight was delayed by over an hour. Overall but bad, arrived safely and thank God.

Curious and efficient service ! First time flying with SAS and very pleased!

I wish they have given us explanations for the delays. And the rebooking process in Copenhagen was too long. I had to wait about 4 hours before they assign me a hotel. From there the handling process (accommodation, transportation and meal) was excellent.

Our trip plan from Kayak stated we were flying SAS. That was not true. The first leg was a Delta flight. We wasted 25 minutes before finding out to check in with the correct airline. Then our SAS flight for the second leg arrived 25 minutes late, and our third leg flight with SAS closed the gate knowing the flight delay was SAS’s fault, and that this flight would only be backed up 5 minutes. The final kicker was that between Delta and SAS, they lost all our checked luggage.

Since our earlier flight was delayed, we missed this flight and were rerouted on Lufthansa 2 days later.

Our originating flight into Copenhagen was an hour delayed, causing us to miss our main flight from Copenhagen to the US. There had been snow and we needed to be de-iced, but they seemed very slow getting the flight ready, with no explanation. The delay caused us to be put in with thousands stuck at the airport with an all day wait to get rebooked on a flight 2 days out.

Scandinavian Airlines is terrible. Flight was late. Lost luggage. Rude flight attendants. Terrible experience.

The flight was very cold, and the seats were rather uncomfortable. The food has been better on our other SAS experiences. Most significantly, the luggage with most of my wife's personal items and clothes didn't make the flight. Hoping for a quick resolution, but no real opportunity to speak with a Human has us concerned.

Ancient aircraft (busted armrests, poor cabin temperature with no option for passenger control). Garbage everywhere. Risible checking of safely conditions on landing. Also, late.

Feels like economy sits are getting smaller especially while eating food

Terrible customer service. The flight attendants were rude. We experienced significant turbulence for a large portion of the flight and there was very little check in from the flight deck. The space was extremely limited to the point where it felt like torture. Never again

Nice, quick flight. There were lots of empty seats so they told me I could sit next to the emergency exit where I would have more legroom.

The staff was kind and helpful. There was no food, and you needed to bring your own earphones to use the entertainment, which I didn’t know.

They wouldn’t check in my luggage even though I had one checked bag prepaid. So I took my bag to the gate and tried to check it in there and two employees scolded me for bringing a large bag to the gate. I told them I was trying to check it in and that it was prepaid, and they said they couldn’t guarantee that it would arrive at my destination but they finally let me drop it off when boarding the plane and pick it up right after exiting the plane. There was no food, and there was no entertainment.

Overall satisfied and would fly with them again. They could improve the check-in efficiency at BOS, we got backed up because it seemed there were passengers requiring much more time for check in.

The customer service was unbeatable from the wheelchair assist team to the flight attendants. The pilot also did an excellent job managing the turbulence.

The Experience Was Torture Spend a few extra dollars and avoid Icelandair at all costs. There is absolutely no refreshments, no food, no drinks. Only water, coffee, tea are free and at only half a tiny cup. Entertainment is limited selection of films, shows and mostly outdated. The seats are smaller than usual, with no cushion, no pillows, no blankets. First time in my life have I witness an airline asking for donations in spare change for a charity. With all the money Icelandair saves by starving the passenger, they can afford to give this charity on their own.

Again, we paid $ 328.00 for specific seats are were assigned those seats.

Never again. Terrible hospitality and human decency for an international flight. No food, no snacks, no beverages, blankets, pillows, limited entertainment. Tiny seats without any cushion and some do not even recline. I was shocked that they did not charge for seat belts. Never in my life have I witness asking for "spare change" for charity before landing on both legs of the flight. Icelandair can contribute on their own to said, so called, children's charity with the money saved from providing 3 centimeters of tea and water to hungry and dehydrated passengers.

Having been prepared for paying for everything on board other than water, coffee and tea the service was OK. Food and drink is expensive but the food was OK if limited in scope. Plane was clean and obviously well serviced. After complaining about having to walk in wind and rain to a get a bus to the airport the same thing happened at Portland. I’m sure you could get a terminal gate flight, complimentary food and drink for not much more money without traipsing through rain and slush in Reykjavik. Not bad but not great.

If there was a disclaimer regarding food service or lack thereof, l missed it. If l had known l would have prepared better. Same with transferring at Reykjavik. No information about disembarking via stairs into rain, slush and puddles deep enough to swallow a foot. After being treated to haute cuisine restaurants and warm inviting environment during the flight, the airport is, let’s be kind, disappointing. Plane was comfortable, Airbus, staff were welcoming enough. I would likely try the route again. Maybe have a night and day in Iceland. Maybe not.

Excellent service; they helped me reschedule so I can fly in an earlier flight

Wonderful staff. The boarding process can be improved a little better by adequate prior communication but all in all they did fine. However the boarding gate was quite unfreindly to elderly and who needs help with sevral stairs.

Flight map did not work. Crew was great, food was good, plane took off on time and landed early. That's all I can ask.

I had a good comfortable seat. There was nearly an hour delay. There was an accident with the champagne, but I was well compensated. These things happen sometimes.

Very good. Comfortable and I felt well taken care of from start to finish

Bulkhead seats should not be an extra charge. They are extremely uncomfortable. And we missed our connecting flight due to slow luggage retreaval.

Not great - seats were very narrow and food was terrible.

Some of the crew was sassy and not super helpful. The food was okay, but it seems like they were all unprepared compared to my flight I did from JFK to Frankfurt

We missed our flight. There was not enough time built into the layover to get through immigration, customs, bagclaim, bag rechecking, and the long trip to another terminal and gate. Kayak really screwed up. We took the bus up to Wisconsin and then were picked up in Brookfield by private car. It was lucky we didnt miss the last bus out.

We were in premium economy seats that appeared to be locked in plae, No reclining. My aching back.

Late takeoff, but on time landing. Lost bags, 3 days to find them, still in transit to my location. Power outlets broken, Wi-Fi not working, so much for working on the long flight.

Good. For a long flight. The comfort of the seat could be better. Also, the food was « normal » plane food. Not indian plane food unfortunately! Everything else was smooth and great.

The seats were comfortable. So many empty seats allowed for stretching out and sleeping. The onboard entertainment was pretty good. The cabin crew were so kind and kept the passengers well- hydrated, and well fed.

We had American Airlines on our return and it was confusing if we were going with Aa or BA I had 2 different flight numbers and didn’t get our gate until it was boarding. So we were a bit nervous as the which it was

My touch screen at my seat wasn't working, the films BA advertised on the website for this flight were not available, and the plane was a little dated, food was good and the staff were good, just let down by the aircraft facilities.

Did not like the seating configuration at all with 2+3+2 in business class. Lacking total privacy and comfort

Check-in experience, for business call please provide a premium experience

Lost my luggage, ran out of food choices in business class, ground crew was completely unapologetic.

Excellent. The crew and flight were great. Checking in was easy and everyone was very helpful.

Entertainment devices on A380 need to be fixed, the seats might do with updates.
