Germany Travel Restrictions

For restrictions that apply to vaccinated visitors, please check the official guidelines from Germany for the types of accepted and permitted COVID-19 vaccinations, requirements on proof of vaccination certificates, vaccination validity period, and persons and/or groups that may be exempt from vaccination restrictions.


Germany entry details and exceptions

All travelers aged 12 or over who are permitted to enter Germany must present a negative test result or proof of vaccination or recovery.

Entry is possible from: EU member states, States associated with Schengen (Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein), Other countries from which entry is possible in light of the epidemiological situation assessment by the EU.

Entry from any other country for any purpose is only possible for fully vaccinated people. For people not yet vaccinated, entry from other countries is only possible in exceptional cases and is conditional on there being an urgent need.

COVID-19 testing requirements
Test type

Unvaccinated visitors from the United Kingdom must present a negative RT-PCR (NAAT) or Antigen (quick-test) test taken 48 hours before departing to Germany.

Fully vaccinated visitors with approved vaccination certificates do not need to present a negative COVID-19 test.

Details and exceptions

Except travelers with valid proof of being fully vaccinated and who didn't previously stay in a virus variant area. Children under the age of 6 are exempt from presenting a COVID-19 test.

Rapid antigen tests are recognized if they meet the minimum criteria recommended by the WHO.

Quarantine requirements

Unvaccinated visitors from the United Kingdom will need to quarantine for 10 days upon entering Germany.

Fully vaccinated visitors with approved vaccination certificates do not need to quarantine.

Details and exceptions

Travelers who do not present a valid negative test result, valid proof of vaccination, or valid proof of recovery within 48 hours after their arrival in Germany must quarantine at home for 10 days or until they submit their proof to the digital entry registration.

Exceptions apply to:

1. Those who have spent less than 24 hours in a risk area as part of border traffic with neighboring countries

2.Commuters, doctors, nursing staff, and those visiting close relatives.

3. Unvaccinated Dutch travelers are also not affected by the quarantine obligation.


Return travelReturning to the United Kingdom from Germany

COVID-19 testing requirements
Test type

Travellers returning from Germany must present a negative RT-PCR (NAAT) or Antigen (quick-test) test taken 72 hours before departure to the United Kingdom.

Details and exceptions

Travelers are required to present a negative COVID-19 test (a PCR test, a LAMP test or an antigen test, such as an LFD (lateral flow device) test) taken any time in the 3 days before the departure date. If a traveler is changing flight, the test should be taken in the 3 days of the final departure point to UK.

The test result must be in either English, French or Spanish. Translations will not be accepted.

Travelers could be fined £500 if they are unable to present a pre-departure test.

Travelers from the Common Travel Area (the UK, Ireland, Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey, Ascension, Falkland Islands and St Helena) and children who are 0-10 years old going to England (0-11 years old for children going to Wales, Scotland and NI) are exempt from the pre-departure testing requirement.

Quarantine requirements

Visitors returning from Germany are not required to quarantine upon entering the United Kingdom.

Fully vaccinated visitors with approved vaccination certificates do not need to quarantine.

Details and exceptions

All travelers including vaccinated individuals who are mandated to quarantine in a managed hotel must be administered with day 2 and day 8 test. They will be required to continue their quarantine period regardless of the result of their day 2 test. For travelers who have positive result, quarantine will start from the date after the result of their day 2 test and they no longer need to use the day 8 test.

For travelers who will have a positive result after using the day 8 test, they will need to quarantine further. They will have to finish the quarantine starting from the date after the result of their day 8 test.

Travelers who have both negative result for day 2 and day 8 test will be out of the 10-day quarantine from the day they arrived in the country.

Travelers going to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are advised to check further details regarding their quarantine.
