Václav Havel Prague Airport: Expert advice and recommendations

Expert travel writer Kirstie Pickering shares all you need to know before booking a flight to or from Václav Havel Prague Airport.
Kirstie Pickering
9 October 2024

Václav Havel Airport Prague is just 9km from Czechia’s capital city, Prague. The hub has two terminals and welcomed over 13.8 million passengers in 2023. Travellers fly to Prague to enjoy the city’s enchanting Old Town Square and its famous astronomical clock, the bustling Charles Bridge and Prague Castle – and that’s just scratching the surface.

I love the magic of Prague. It isn’t a huge city, and that’s one of the reasons I like it so much – I don’t feel rushed as I amble around the winding streets, dipping in and out of museums and trinket shops, and stopping in one of the many bars and cafes for a beer or hot chocolate (mood dependent).

Travelling between Václav Havel Airport Prague and the city

You can jump in a taxi or use public transport to reach the city from Václav Havel Airport Prague – both are fairly affordable options compared with other countries in Europe, but public transport is the natural option for those on a tight budget and is what I have always used. I’d rather save my money for buchty, sweet rolls that come with different fillings like chocolate or jam best enjoyed with a hot coffee.

The 59 bus runs every 5-10 minutes and takes you to a metro station on the line A, which goes to all of the most visited neighbourhoods in Prague and takes around 20 minutes. To take this bus, you can either get a ticket at the yellow machines outside the arrival area, or you can pay on the bus and keep your ticket for the metro connection. You reach the city centre in about 45 minutes.

The Airport Express bus takes 40 minutes to reach its final destination of Prague Main Station – most first time tourists will stay near the Old Town Square, which is a 15-minute walk from this station. The service runs every 30 minutes from 5.30am until 10pm. Outside of these hours, there is a taxi rank outside of arrivals – or book ahead from Fix Taxi and Taxi Praha. Uber Airport is also available.

Transport routes to the rest of Czechia

Most people will think of Prague when chatting about a visit to Czechia, but the country is so much more than its capital city. From Václav Havel Airport Prague, jump on a direct bus to Brno, Czechia’s second largest city – the journey takes around three and a half hours. Brno is famous for its gastronomy, so is certainly not one to be missed for foodies.

There are more extensive connections to the rest of the country from Prague city centre. In the south is Český Krumlov, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a day trip from Prague or stay longer to explore this fairytale town and its grand castle, cobbled streets and quaint buildings. There are buses from Prague Main Bus Terminal (Florenc) to Český Krumlov and the journey takes around two hours 40 minutes per way.

Journey east to the city of Ostrava, which is steeped in history thanks to its strong industrial roots. Reach the city in under four hours from Prague – and as it’s just 15km from the border with Poland, make plans to venture onwards from Ostrava to Krakow. It’s just under three hours away by bus.

Travelling internationally from Václav Havel Airport Prague

You can fly directly from Prague to 170 destinations including Dubai, Beijing, New York and most European cities – there are 12 flights to London every day, its most popular route. Recent announcements include a direct route to Abu Dhabi with Etihad Airways from June 2025 and a new direct service to Egypt with EGYPTAIR.

Nestled in the center of Europe, it’s also well-connected to other European hotspots for easy journeys overland – from Prague’s Main Station, jump on a two-hour bus north to the German city of Dresden, or Nuremberg, famed for its beautiful traditional Christmas markets, is around three and a half hours away.

Airport hotels

Ramada by Wyndham, Holiday Inn and Courtyard by Marriott are three of the closest hotels to Václav Havel Airport Prague – my choice was the latter ahead of an early flight out of Czechia. The Courtyard by Marriott Hotel is located right at the airport, making for easy early morning access to departures.

The four-star hotel has a fitness centre, an on-site restaurant called Oléo Pazzo Mediterranean Bistro, which offers dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner service, and there’s even live music on selected evenings. There are also tea and coffee making facilities in every room which, as a Brit, is very much appreciated.

Hiring a car at Václav Havel Airport Prague

Those who know little about Czechia are surprised at its size and the beauty that lies beyond the capital city. There’s much to be explored on a road trip around Czechia, from Podyjí National Park to Panská skála, the natural landmark in the north often referred to as The Lord’s Rock, and it’s simple to hire a car from the airport to access these. Václav Havel Airport Prague offers car rental with Sixt, Hertz, CAR4WAY, Czechocar, Avis and Rent Plus.

Check-in and FastTrack security

The airport offers a private check-in service at Terminal 2, which could be particularly of interest to travellers with young children. An agent handles check-in, and you then have access to the FastTrack Lounge and queue-free individual screening. This service takes the onus away from travellers as they are guided through each step of the process, so is also a great one for nervous travellers. FastTrack security is available as a standalone offer, too.

One to note: In Terminal 1, Prague’s security comes after its shopping and dining offerings. At many European airports, security comes first, so this is an important factor to remember – if you’re dining in restaurants in particular, make sure you leave plenty of time to pass through security afterwards as queues can get lengthy. I’ve seen people miss their flight by getting this wrong, so you’ve been warned! At Terminal 2, you go through security before shopping and dining.

Lounges at Václav Havel Airport Prague

There are four lounge types at the airport – at Terminal 2, there the FastTrack Lounge and Erste Premier Lounge, and then there’s the Mastercard Lounge at Terminal 1. At both terminals is a VIP Service Club Continental – but my pick was the Erste Premier offering.

The lounge is open from 5am to 10pm daily and offers limitless snacks and drinks, Wi-Fi, showers and plenty of comfortable seating – there’s even a children’s play area for families too. If you’re looking for a more private setting, you can pay an additional fee to have a VIP lounge to yourself with a private bar – very fancy. All visits are capped at two hours and children under three go free.

Food and shopping

There is a diverse range of food and drink options at Václav Havel Airport Prague – I’ve eaten at Banh-mi-ba for a delicious preflight Vietnamese meal, and you can’t go wrong with a focaccia from Zigolini Caffè & Bar too. If fast food is your vice, head to Burger King and KFC or, if you’re feeling fancier, stop for a glass of the fizzy stuff at Bottega Prosecco Bar & Caffé.

When it comes to shopping, the range of goods at Aelia Duty Free is more modest compared to other European airports but ticks the boxes for perfumes, cosmetics, trinkets and gifts for loved ones. If you’re open to more Prague-themed keepsakes, head to Made by Praha (don’t forget the fridge magnet), and I love Prague Chocolate Steiner & Kovarik for both traditional and more unique chocolate flavour combinations.

My experience of Václav Havel Airport Prague and the city

Václav Havel Airport Prague is a growing hub with great connections to global destinations, but its strength lies in its easy access to the rest of Europe – both by overland transport and onward flights. Its Central Europe position means it’s a perfect starting point for visitors from outside the continent with a packed itinerary of city hotspots – and Prague is the perfect city to kickstart any trip.

I’ll come back to Prague again and again – the beautiful baroque buildings and Gothic churches are just as good in person as on the postcards, and the city changes again as the sun goes down and the bustling nightlife scene comes to life. Looking for a night of dancing? Head to Karlovy Lázně, a five-story disco club and the biggest club in Central Europe, and let me know if you find my lost shoe.
